The Roots Of Redshirt

I often wonder how a particular term or concept made its way into the popular culture and became a part of our common knowledge.

For example, did "wild thing" exist in the public's consciousness before it became a song title? Who was the very first "shock jock"? Where did "bling" originate? And who, precisely, coined the nickname "Brangelina"? (I want a name and phone number.)

Someone, somewhere, first recognized the "red shirt" phenomenon on Star Trek and cleverly smooshed the two words together. And the rest, as they say, is history. But who first uttered the phrase "And the rest is history"? Was it Walter Cronkite? Euripides? Soupy Sales?

Out of the blue, a couple of years back, my youngest son came up with the undeniably catchy phrase "armpit booty biscuit." He swore he didn't get it from Spongebob, and it didn't show up in a Google search. (I wonder if it will now ...)

"Armpit booty biscuit."

You saw it here first.
