To "compare" means to examine two or more things in order to note similarities and differences.
To "examine" means to regard something carefully.
To "regard" means to think highly of, or to esteem.
To "esteem" means to look upon with respect or admiration.
To "respect" means to show a willingness to obey.
To "obey" means to follow the commands or instructions of others.
So, obviously, when someone says "You can't compare apples and oranges," what he or she REALLY MEANS TO SAY is: "I refuse to allow you to willingly follow the commands of apples and oranges."
